Java Installation

This pages describes the installation of a Java Runtime Environement that is required to run the sample applications of this homepage. Additionally there is link to a Installation-Test-Applet. This applet can be used to verify whether the installation was successfull or not.

All applications require at least JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.4. It is recommended to use this version, because installation is simplified. Version 1.4 includes for example the Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) which avoids installing it on your own.

The following pragrams provide an installer that can be run under Windows and therefore are easy to install. It is also possible to run the programms provided on this homepage under Linux or Suns Solaris. The links lead to the homepage from Sun Microsystems where you can download the required components.

1. JRE 1.4.1 [Windows] [Linux]

On this page you have to choose a version according to your operating system. Download and install it by double clicking the donwloaded exe. Since version 1.4 Java Web Start is installed automatically.

Now, you can verify if Java Web Start is registered as helper application. Open the preferences menu item (can be found in the edit menu). Go to Navigator und select helper applications. You should find an entry for Java Web Start [application/x-java-jnlp-file] there. If not you have to add it on your own. Select "new type". The MIME type is application/x-java-jnlp-file, the extension is jnlp and the application is javaws.exe.

2. JMF 2.1.1 [Windows] [Linux Version]

Choose the version for the JRE and install it. Its also a standard Windows installer, that means download the exe und run it by double clicking it.

3. JAI 1.1 [Windows] [Linux]

Here too, the version for the JRE has to be choosen.

Verify your Installation

After installing all packages, you can use this Installations-Test-Applet to verify your installation.
